There is a first time for everything when it comes to the Design Tech crew. A phone call from the people at Oprah have the guys meeting Client Sanna whose horrible luck in the past with shoddy contractors compels Palanca and Johnny D to complete the job for free. Thing get complicated on the job site between bird feathers and nest, concrete in the roof and to top it all off, Kenny getting so lost that he finds himself in a head on collision in the Design Tech van.
The Design Tech crew attempt to finish the last piece of a project otherwise completed months ago, a range hood hanging over the kitchen stove. The guys not only are racing the clock to complete the project before the client returns home, but facing a sick Palanca, a broken down Jeep, and Kenny on one of his first projects.
Palanca and Johnny still do not see eye-to-eye when it comes to Lincoln Place's budget, including the blue stone steps. After kicking Palanca off the job site, Johnny D finds himself needing help on completing the fence project. Tension grows even more when Johnny D tells Palanca his newest plan for the backyard space.
The Design Tech crew heads to Lincoln Place, the development project of Johnny D and Palanca. They call in help from sub contractors Steve and Louie to tackle the radiant heating in the floors and the electrical wiring in the kitchen. To get out of the change order items that come from the project, Johnny D challenges Steve and Louie to a golfing outing with payment on the line.
Fran and Rachel are both lucky to have handy husbands such as John and John, but getting them to complete two projects for them is proving to be a challenge. Palanca has been putting off building a dining room table fit for a king and Johnny D needs to build a screen door to save his kids from bugs. Through compromise, the guys help each other out to complete both projects and make their wives happy.
Both Johnny D and Palanca have things they do not enjoy about working for Design Tech. For Palanca, it is office work. Thankfully, he gets out of the office to remove a fire escape. Later he saves the day when a water main breaks. On the other hand, Johnny D would rather stay in the office, but is a good sport when he has to do manual labor assisting Palanca on the fire escape. And when problems arise with his second development project, 12th St, he is able to get dirty.
Johnny D is back at Lincoln Place trying to complete the curtain wall, but runs into problems with sub contractor Mike. Meanwhile, Palanca and Billy are pouring a sidewalk to get ready for a block party organized by Billy's father-in-law. To complete the project, the boys need to take a field trip to Greco Concrete and get to tour the facility and test out the latest equipment.
The Design Tech Crew is busy again in the backyard of Lincoln Place, but before Palanca can head over to help out with the bathroom, he and Kenny take a small detour to the dealership. The Design Tech Crew heads to the Cambridge Paver Factory for a tour and they pick out the perfect pavers for Lincoln Place. Design Tech replaces the totaled van, leaving employees excited.
Design Tech is stepping into the future whether John Palanca likes it or not. Johnny D decides the best way to approach a hesitant Palanca is by making it into another friendly competition between the duo. In the course of the episode, the guys renovate a high-rise apartment in Manhattan, build a deck, and get to play with some new toys.
The Design Tech guys like to stick to their ideal roles and projects within the company, which doesn't always please everyone else. When the guys do not have their way, tempers begin to rise. So the guys get the idea to switch up roles within the company to allow each other to see what they deal with on a daily basis.
The Design Tech team is preparing a foundation for an extension to a hair salon and must use a grade beam solution to match the adjacent building's foundation. Billy finds an unexpected surprise in the back yard while prepping the back yard. Palanca, Johnny D, and Billy take a tour of a quarry to select the perfect stone for a natural wall at Lincoln Place
Facing tough times like the rest of the country, Design Tech finds itself taking any work it can find including building a boiler room in a cramped basement. Long time employee Kenny takes matters into his own hands to look after fellow employees, putting his job at risk.
Design Tech's development project, Lincoln Place, is nearing completion with the finishing touches. Engineered hardwood floors go down as well as the barrier in the front allowing them to pour a much needed sidewalk. Recently fired Kenny surprises the guys, pleading for his job.
