The Vanilla Ice Project: The Green Mansion Miracle, Pt. 6 - The Outside
Vanilla Ice and his crew tackle the last pieces of the Palm Beach mansion reno puzzle: the exterior, the yard and the garage. See how fresh paint and custom landscaping gives the "Green Toad" the facelift it needed.
Docking and Rocking
With much of the interior of the Green Mansion ready to show, Vanilla Ice and his team shift their focus to the exterior spaces. And it's about time -- this Palm Beach mansion is in serious need of some curb appeal.
BEFORE: The Exterior
Neglected landscaping, overgrown Oak trees with a shedding problem and an underwhelming color scheme made the Green Mansion, dubbed the "Green Toad" by Ice, unappealing to buyers and neighbors.
BEFORE: The Exterior
The two heavy columns surrounding the entrance were unnecessary and hid a potential focal point for the front of the house.
BEFORE: The Exterior
Vanilla Ice (aka Rob VanWinkle) defined the color of the exterior of the house as "puke green."
BEFORE: The Exterior
Even the garage doors were too outdated for this multi-million-dollar mansion. As Rob says, you'd have trouble sleeping at night knowing your cars were protected from the elements by "tin can" garage doors.
BEFORE: The Exterior
Landscaping around the side of the house, a place Rob says is often overlooked during renovations, was also in need of some attention.
BEFORE: The Exterior
The backyard did nothing to entice buyers who would be interested in the house, if only for the incredible view and proximity to the waterfront.
BEFORE: The Exterior
The Green Mansion was not only outdated and ugly, but it was also quite cluttered before renovations could begin. Can Ice and his crew take this house from green frog to beautiful prince?
AFTER: The Exterior
The Green Mansion after renovations looks like it's fit for royalty.
AFTER: The Exterior
Rob demo'd the existing concrete columns blocking the front door, raised the roof and created a 10-foot addition with three archways to give the Palm Beach mansion an estate-like vibe.
AFTER: The Exterior
A fresh coat of paint and top-of-the-line fixtures, like these custom steel chandeliers made by Rob himself, provide an instant boost to the home's curb appeal.
AFTER: The Exterior
Nothing is getting through this solid-as-a-rock, reinforced front door.
AFTER: The Exterior
Rob replaced the existing roof with clay tiles and went with a terra cotta colored paint job to make it pop. New intricately patterned pavers give the driveway leading up to the house a much more welcoming feel.
AFTER: The Exterior
The Green Mansion is also now totally powered by solar panels on the roof that produce about $4-$6 of electricity per panel. A solar-powered water heater will also help the new owner to cut costs.
AFTER: The Exterior
After uprooting a problematic Oak tree in the backyard, Rob installed a 15-foot LED tree and a custom-built bar with a concrete countertop and an ice tray in the middle for keeping patio drinks cold all summer long.
AFTER: The Exterior
The sunken firepit is filled with layers of drainage rocks underneath decorative ones for keeping out rainwater.
AFTER: The Exterior
Rob employed a team of landscapers to completely overhaul the flowers and plants on every inch of the property.
AFTER: The Exterior
A lit, windy walkway leads to the custom dock built into the home's best feature: the waterfront. The dock has a lit opening in the center for comfortable fishing and is sturdy enough to serve as a helicopter pad.
BEFORE: The Garage
After clearing out the clutter in the garage, Ice and his crew decide to turn it into a fresh hangout space.
BEFORE: The Garage
There's a garage in there somewhere.
BEFORE: The Garage
Without any means for storage, the former garage had very little purpose.
AFTER: The Garage
The car isn't included with the house, but the flat-screen TV, surfboard racks and insulated, automatic-locking garage doors are.
AFTER: The Garage
Fresh paint and a brand new checkerboard floor revive the formerly musty and dusty garage space.
AFTER: The Garage
The custom-built cabinets continue the color scheme of the floor and are made entirely of acrylic.
