Heather Jansz is from Sri Lanka. She moved here in 1974 and her tasty ethnic creations quickly made her a star of the local restaurant scene as she co-owned three restaurants. She specializes in homemade chutney and is famous for her salsa. You can find all of her wonderful recipes in her cookbook-- Fire and Spice: The Cuisine of Sri Lanka, published in 1989. These days, Heather is a professional shopper but she never strays far from the kitchen. She caters dinners large and small, and she also goes on the road and holds private, group cooking classes. Heather shows homeowners how to make meals from scratch. She even grows plants in her living room, like the kaffir lime leaf, so she can incorporate the very freshest ingredients in her recipes. The only thing Heather can't seem to make is more room in her kitchen. It is filled with carts from her old restaurants. They are loaded with super-sized pots and pans, cookbooks and dishes. She has little counter space, a small sink and a range that is not nearly as big as she needs. We are going to change all that though with an amazing Kitchen Renovation! After a bit of demolition, we begin reconstruction by creating an opening into the living room. The vent is moved to accommodate the location of the new cooktop and then its on to the floor where porcelain tile is set in a diagonal pattern.

This second of four episodes begins with the installation of custom cherry cabinets. The sink base is modified to accommodate an apron front copper sink. A copper tabletop is made into a raised island with room for seating which will allow Heather to hold cooking classes in her own home.

We bring in the professionals to install a solid surface countertop, then work on making organization a little easier for Heather by building a recycling center and new shelving inside a pantry closet. Two solid surface ledges are added to give her more space for presentation and then Paul and Heather begin setting the backsplash - Mexican-style tile with a diamond-patterned inset.

The backsplash is grouted and a pot filler is installed as we begin the final of four episodes. Updated track lighting, a couple of paint projects, new floating black glass appliances and Heather's kitchen is officially "spiced-up".
Priority number one for newlyweds Andy and Allanna - updating the kitchen in their otherwise perfect house. Oak cabinets with a dated door style, damaged countertops, faux brick flooring and barely functioning appliances make this kitchen desperate for a floor to ceiling makeover. After a little demo, we begin the transition by laying down a snap-together walnut floor right over the existing vinyl. A new limestone countertop is installed and stainless steel appliances are brought in. Finally, to the existing cabinet boxes we add new shaker style doors and drawer fronts.
Traditional home seeks modern kitchen. That pretty much sums up our next project. The stylish home was built in 1908 and still features the original woodwork, brick fireplace and built-in buffet. The kitchen however, was remodeled in the '80s and is now void of any charm or character. With our help, that's going to change. Now Tim, the homeowner, admits he's not the world's most handy guy. Shopping and decorating are his thing, painting and power tools? Not so much. But match him up with our Paul Ryan and anything is possible. Yes, we?re not only transforming this kitchen but the homeowner as well! By the time we are done, the space will have an updated, urban vibe while still being warm and welcoming so as to compliment the rest of the house. The kitchen?s wow-factor will simply be off the charts-and our homeowner will be transformed into a tried and true do-it-yourselfer! After removing the appliances and countertops, Paul and Tim begin demolition in the nook area and promptly run into problem number one - an infestation of carpenter ants. Professionals take care of that issue and Paul and Tim start to tackle the rest of the rebuilding. The existing cabinet boxes are painted, the nook is insulated and covered with beadboard and reclaimed wide-plank flooring is installed.

To maximize the countertop space in this kitchen, a built-in coffemaker is recessed in a wall cavity. A large, powerful vent fan replaces the outdated ceiling exhaust fan. And finally, Tim learns how to make his own countertops out of concrete.

In this final of three episodes, we begin by adding stainless steel cabinet doors to the existing cabinets. A backsplash comprised of classic subway tile is installed and the reclaimed hardwood flooring is sanded. Countertops and new appliances finish off this remodel and make Tim's kitchen finally match the rest of his stylish home.
Sophia knows what she wants. After graduating from college and landing her first job at age 22, she said "I'm not throwing my money away on rent, I'm buying a house." After plenty of research, and house hunting, Sophia found the perfect starter house. It's a one-bedroom 1950s ranch style house with good-bones, a generous-sized yard and a big garage. With the help of her boyfriend, best friend and parents, Sophia started making the place her own with all new paint and furnishings. Now she's ready to tackle the kitchen. It's a galley style kitchen that adjoins the dining room, so it feels spacious. It just needs an update to make it more functional-and attractive. In this quick fix transformation we install a snap-together floor, replace the sink and faucet and bring in new appliances. The existing countertops are covered with granite.
As Joel & Liz walked from their apartment to the coffee shop, the "For Sale" sign was raised in the yard of their favorite house. It was the big four square Greek Revival house on the corner, built from a Sears catalog kit in 1908. They were leaving on vacation in a few hours and made an offer on the house, sight-unseen. When they got the house, it was everything they had expected with loads of wonderful details and, just as they imagined, it had an outdated kitchen. Now after polishing up the rest of the place, they've set their sights on the kitchen. Joel is a wine rep and Liz is a restaurant developer. She brings together chefs and investors to join forces for restaurant ventures. Both homeowners want their kitchen to be a gathering space for clients and friends but still pet and child friendly for their two lab puppies and the throngs of neighborhood kids who love to visit. Demolition is first on the list as the entire kitchen is gutted. A transom window is installed to let in more light and new parquet flooring is laid.

In this episode, we begin by installing an in-floor utility sink, which will be useful for washing off muddy dogs. Then, the mudroom walls get tiled with slate. Finally, we frame in a rough opening and install French doors to the mudroom.
