Dad's Den

Kevin Carroll and his wife Mary Jo have raised five daughters together in their Kingston, Mass., home. Being the only male in a house full of females hasn't always been easy for Kevin, who has worked multiple jobs over the years. In fact, just finding a quiet room to relax in is nearly impossible. That's why the six females in Kevin's life have called in Dean and Derek to help design the perfect outdoor den. The guys will create a space where Kevin can just kick back and hang out - even in cold weather.

Season 6, Episode 4

Washington Wine Bar

Patrick Kannan, a finance director, and stay-at-home mother of three Kelly are entertainers. These Washington-area sports enthusiasts know that one of the best parts of the game is the tailgate, and they do it right! But their basement sports bar-which plays host to an ever-expanding crowd of friends and family-is just too small. As a result, the party always spills up the stairs and out into their very empty backyard. So why not make their backyard, with the staircase as an entrance, into an outdoor wine bar, giving a new, classy feel to an old tradition? Dean and Derek start by removing the old sod and installing a patio that flows out from the basement stairs. They'll add a fireplace with a built-in hearth and seating wall in one corner and a bar with a limestone cap on the opposite end. A custom-made wine-barrel ice chest and other wine accents will clear up any question about this group's intentions.

Season 6, Episode 6

Outdoor Poker Lounge

Newlyweds Ryan and Kristin Welch recently bought a home in Las Vegas. Ryan is a professional poker player who's living the Las Vegas dream. Ironically, he doesn't have much space inside his house to practice his craft or play with friends-many of whom play professionally. But poker playing and late-night parties inside are turning their nice new house into a cluttered disaster. With an unfinished backyard that needs help, Kristin decides to take the party outdoors with a relaxing outdoor poker room for Ryan! Working with some already-completed elements like a pool, Dean and Derek bring function to this desert area with a gazebo and outdoor poker table. Because no poker game is complete without a few beverages, they build a bar veneered in stone to match the pool and top if off with a recycled glass countertop. They retain the back slope by carving recesses into the earth with jackhammers and build small alcoves walled with interlocking block. Modern planters and lots of desert-friendly plantings sustained by a new irrigation system are added to complement the space and make the boys feel like they're playing on The Strip!

Season 6, Episode 8

Fabulous Front Porch

Florida resident Barri VanCoulter and her two children, Michael and Julianna, have lots of friends in their cozy neighborhood but limited space in their small Palm Harbor home to entertain and socialize. With an inside space that's too tight and an unusable backyard with a slope and a drainage easement, Barri's entertaining options are limited. Dean and Derek agree there is only one option: a fabulous front porch! The design also includes a huge new pergola, a brick patio in a herringbone pattern, a seating wall and a fire pit.
