Mike Holmes has helped hundreds of homeowners over the years, but now the homeowner who needs his help is his son MJ. MJ wants to renovate his tiny bungalow so he and his girlfriend Lisa can have a place of their own to start a family. Of course, MJ's modest renovation plans are turned upside down by Mike's ambitious plans to gut the house and add a second story.
Cracks in the foundation put a dent in MJ's hot tub dreams, while Mike tries to keep the focus on structure as the second floor walls go up. With the house now exposed, MJ decides not to tarp the house before a heavy rain, dampening both Mike's mood and the wood beneath his feet.
Construction is going smoothly as Mike and MJ work side by side focusing on the exterior envelope of the home. Sure enough, illness hits the crew, forcing Mike to leave the job site, which opens the door for MJ to make some important structural decisions without his dad. What could possibly go wrong with that?
Tensions run high as Mike and MJ engage in a revolving door of disagreements over hardwood flooring, exterior brick, and a lively debate about dishwashers. MJ's nerves are frayed as he prepares to ask Lisa an important question, during a romantic weekend getaway. Meanwhile, Mike takes over the job site, with some frustrating consequences for MJ.
It's the finishing stages, but the end is not in sight for MJ, as he runs into financial set backs, tiling troubles with Lisa, and door debates with his dad. As tensions mount, MJ must come to a decision that has repercussions for the completion of his home.
Emotions are high as MJ delivers his custom table to an unsuspecting friend. Then, after months in the making, it's all Holmes on deck as everyone pitches in for the final push to complete the house before the big reveal.
