Incredible Transformations From America’s Most Desperate Landscape 2017
See the amazing before and after photos from this year's ultimate desperate yard makeover.
Winners of 2017
After searching far and wide for the most lackluster yard in the country, contractor and host Jason Cameron headed to Mobile, Alabama to give homeowners Melissa and David Laster’s backyard a complete makeover, in this year’s special of America's Most Desperate Landscape.
Exterior, Before
Before even reaching the back of the house, Jason had to do something about this front yard. It was overgrown, lacked any sense of curb appeal, and needed an update, stat.
Exterior, After
Thanks to simple changes like a manicured lawn, some fresh plants, and a crisp new coat of paint, this house now makes a fantastic first impression.
Family Touch
To add some personal touches to the exterior, on top of the brand new dark door, James hung a monogram ornament that homeowner David Laster’s mom made for the family.
Back Porch, Before
Before, the Laster’s back porch had plenty of potential, but was completely barren.
Back Porch, After
With the help of a brand new natural wood deck, some stylish outdoor furniture, and an even a few pieces of art, this back porch is now the perfect spot for lounging.
Back Porch, After
The new porch features a chic outdoor couch and set of armchairs, equipped with bold blue upholstery and vibrant throw pillows. The upgraded space also features a two-toned rug, and cool industrial table.
Outdoor Art
On the other side of the backyard exterior, Jason pumped up the appeal by installing a synthetic grass wall feature.
Backyard, Before
The Laster’s backyard was rampant with overgrown plants, and the lawn was nothing short of dismal.
Lawn Makeover
Jason worked with the homeowners to totally transform their sad backyard into a beautifully landscaped space, filled with palm trees, lush green plants, and vibrant flowers.
Gorgeous Landscaping
Jason proudly poses with his latest and greatest landscaped backyard.
Playset, Before
This slide and trees house in the backyard weren’t exactly a welcoming place for the Laster children to play.
Playset, After
While the original slide remains, the old play structure was completely rebuilt, with a light wood that matches the rest of the backyard renovations. Plus, with the addition of new adirondack chairs treated with Cabot stain, the parents now have a place to lounge while the kids are at play.
Playset, After
The play area is a total success! The Laster children have a blast on their new slide.
Pool, Before
While a pool is always a fantastic backyard bonus, this one in the Laster’s home wasn’t exactly suited for a pleasant swim.
Pool, After
After renovating the pool deck and structure (plus giving the pool itself a solid scrub), this gleaming backyard feature is the perfect place for kids and parents alike to go for a refreshing dip.
Pool, After
Jason shows off the brand new pool and deck to the homeowners, including the addition of these two stylish lawn chairs, perfect for an afternoon lounge and soaking up some vitamin D.
Pool Kings
Jason didn’t take on the entire pool undertaking alone—he got a little help from the hosts of Pool Kings, Kyle Peek and Justin Peek, to make the transpiration truly spectacular.
Pool Deck, After
In addition to a totally renovated pool and new lawn chairs, Jason also built an open outdoor room on the pool deck, ideal for summer nights with the family or entertaining guests.
Outdoor Room, Before
The deck that used to sit next to the pool appeared totally barren and neglected.
Outdoor Room, After
Now, this outdoor space is equipped with a dining room and living room, which even includes a fireplace and flat screen TV.
Final Touches
In addition to a gorgeous dining space, Jason installed a brand new BBQ in the outdoor room, giving the Laster’s the option to whip up a meal al fresco.
Heating Things Up
One of the most unique features of this outdoor room is the modern, multi-functional fireplace, which serves two separate seating areas on the deck.
Pool Deck, After
Jason shows homeowners Melissa and David yet another cozy and functional seating area they can enjoy.
Renovation Celebration
Out on the brand new deck, Jason, the Laster family, their house guests, and the host of Pool Kings celebrate the incredible backyard transformation.
