Upcycle Old Toys Into Adorable, Useful Accessories
Create adorable key chains and planters from kids' toys.
When we recently cleaned out our boys' stash of toys, we came across a plethora of mini animals at the bottom of a toy bin. Instead of tossing all of them into the donation pile, we thought it would be fun to upcycle some of the figurines into something useful: a key chain and a mini planter.

Supplies

Debbie Wolfe
- toy animal figurines
- paint and brushes
- eye hooks
- drill and bits
- threaded ring (for key chain)
*As far as the planter goes, our planter’s purpose is to hold air plants. If you put a plant that requires soil in it, it will need a drain hole at the bottom.
Paint

Debbie Wolfe
Paint all the mini figurines. Use modeling paint or spray paint for the best results.
Hook

Debbie Wolfe
Once the paint has dried, add the eye hooks to the smaller figurines. Depending on the animal, it might be better to place the eye hook on the head versus the back. If needed, drill a small pilot hole to make screwing in the eye hook easier.
Ring

Debbie Wolfe
Slip the threaded ring through the eye hook, then add a key.
Mini Planter

Debbie Wolfe
Drill a hole large enough to fit your air plant (or plant). The toys are hollow, so drill slowly until you pass through the first layer then stop. You can also enlarge the hole by using a utility knife. Add a plant and place them on your desk.

These little toy figurines are a fun way to turn old toys into something useful and decorative. Your kids will love seeing their toys sticking around.
