Make Your Own Craft Pumpkin Vase Holder
Carvable craft pumpkins offer a variety of crafting possibilities during Halloween, like making reusable vase holders.
Carve-friendly pumpkins have been a staple at craft supply stores for years now. Available in a variety of sizes, shapes and colors, these pumpkins are made from a thick foam that can actually be "carved" with a standard craft or utility knife. They're easy to paint and decorate; you are limited only by your imagination. For those looking to reuse Halloween accessories year after year, craft pumpkins are a great idea to consider.
You can try your hand at getting used to carving craft pumpkins by transforming the plain gourd into a decorated vase holder to add to this year's Halloween decor.
- carvable craft pumpkin - your choice in size
- craft knife
- empty glass jar (regular-mouth canning jars work well)
- glue gun and glue sticks
- embellishments of your choosing
To get started, select a glass jar that fits the size of your craft pumpkin. For reference, smaller craft pumpkins work very well with 8-ounce canning jars. Place your jar on top of the pumpkin around its stem. Trace the opening of the jar with a pencil to create your cutting guide.
Next, carefully begin cutting on the outline you just made. Work slowly as you cut into the foam.
After you've gone around the circle once with your craft knife, remove the top of the pumpkin and set aside.
Tip: keep this piece handy in case you'd like to try a painting or decorating technique that you're curious about, and how it works with the foam.
Cut around the circle opening you've created once more, this time 1/4" away from where you just cut. Remove the excess material.
Place your jar into your pumpkin to make sure it fits tightly inside.
With your pumpkin cut, it's time to decorate. Need a few ideas to get you started? Take a look at these craft supplies at work.
Stickers and Scrapbook Papers
Ornate stickers offer a vintage look to this pumpkin vase when backed with a piece of themed scrapbook paper. The sticker medallion is applied to the front of the vase holder with hot glue.
Ribbons and Trim
Round and round, up and down. Adding pieces of ribbon to your vase holder is a great way to use up scraps you've been holding onto. Check your local fabric store for ribbons in varying shades of black, white and orange.
Felt Shapes and Applique
Craft felt works well on the curved contour of the pumpkins. You can make your own polka dots, channel your inner quilter with a classic block design, or simply add holiday patches all around the surface.
