How to Make a Handcrafted Holiday Tea Bag Gift
Create warm and cozy holiday memories with this thoughtful DIY gift.
Handmade gifts are almost always a hit. These tea bags packaged up in holiday fashion are perfect for the tea lover on your list. With subtle flavors of fruit, cinnamon and vanilla, this handcrafted tea will be perfect for cozying up by the fire. The recipe makes enough for two gifts…one to give and one to keep for yourself.
- 1/2 cup loose black tea
- 1 tablespoon crushed cinnamon stick
- 3 tablespoons dried apple, broken into small pieces
- 2 tablespoons dried orange peel, cut into small pieces
- 1 tablespoon almond slices or slivers
- 1 dried vanilla bean, cut into small pieces
- 16 standard coffee filters
- baker’s twine
- stapler and staples
- tea tag template
- box template
- glue stick
Combine tea, cinnamon, apple, orange, almonds and vanilla bean in a small bowl. Set aside.
Flatten all of the coffee filters as much as possible. Fold a coffee filter in half and crease it along the fold. Fold each side into the center fold and crease those edges creating four segments.
Open the filter and place two teaspoons of the tea mixture in the center of the segment that is second from the left side. Fold the first segment over the second. Next fold the other half of the filter over the first and second flap and then turn the tea over and end with the loose flap facing upward.
Fold the filled filter in half with the open ends together. Fold one corner of the loose ends over to meet the opposite side. Then fold the opposite corner over in the same way, creating a point at the top. Fold the point over to meet the bottom of the previous folds.
Cut a piece of baker’s twine 6 inches long. Tie a knot close to one end. Staple the baker’s twine to the folded edge of the tea bag with the knot pointed down toward the bottom of the tea bag to prevent the string from detaching. Print the tea bag tag template on card stock. Cut the tags out with scissors and fold at the grey line between the trunks.
Apply glue stick to the back side of one of the trees. Insert the loose end of the string between the two trees and press the fold together firmly. Repeat these steps for the remaining tea bags.
Print the tea bag box on plain or printed card stock. Cut the template out with scissors. Begin assembling by using a straight edge to fold the template toward you at all of the grey lines. Add glue stick to the outside of the two side flaps on each of the box ends. Fold up the sides and press the end flaps to the inside of the long box sides to secure. Apply glue stick to the inside of the flaps along the top edge of each of the sides. Fold the flaps over and press to secure them in place. Finally, apply glue stick to the inside of the top flaps on each of the ends. Fold them over and press to secure in place.
Wrap the string and tag around the tea bags with the tree hanging in the front. Fill each box with 8 tea bags. Fold the long green strip from the tea tag template on each end and apply a bit of glue to the front of the folds at the bottom. Carefully press the strip against the inside of the ends of the box.
