How to Build a Wall-Mounted Laundry Rack

Instead of hanging wet laundry all over the house, make a space-saving, fold-away laundry rack.

Materials and Tools

  • (1) 1x6 x 12’ poplar board
  • (1) 1x3 x 12’ poplar board
  • (5) 3/4” diameter round oak dowels 24" long
  • 1-1/2” pocket screws (5/4” thick)
  • 1-1/4” pocket screws (4/4” thick)
  • 1-1/2” countersink screws
  • wood glue
  • 24” piano hinge
  • tether and hardware
  • 2-1/2” cabinet screws
  • measuring tape
  • circular saw with guides or table saw
  • miter saw (optional)
  • framing square
  • drill/driver
  • pencil

Cut List

Rip stock to the proper width (1-1/2” and 2”) and cut to the proper length (according to cut list).

A: (2) 1-1/2"” x 1” x 22”
B: (2) 1-1/2” x 1” x 34-1/2”
C: (5) 3/4” diameter oak dowel x 24” length
D: (2) 1-1/2” x 1” x 24-1/4”
E: (2) 1-1/2” x 1” x 37”
F: (2) 2” x 3/4” x 22-1/4”
G: (2) 2" x 3/4” x 37”

Cut Dowels

Cut dowels to proper length.

Layout and Drill Holes

Lay both B pieces side by side. Use a speed square to mark the holes for the dowels. Clamp the boards to a work table and use a 3/4" drill bit to make the holes.

Assemble Rack

Assemble both A pieces to one B piece using pocket screws and wood glue. Then, insert five dowels into the B piece. Attach the second B piece to the top of the assembly using pocket screws and wood glue (connecting all the pieces together to make a rectangle enclosing the dowels).

Drill pocket screw holes in A, F, and D pieces.

Attach Pieces

Attach both F pieces to both G pieces with screws and wood glue. Then, attach both D pieces to both E pieces with screws and wood glue. You should now have two rectangle frames.

Attach F and G frame assembly to D and E frame assembly from rear surface with countersink screws and wood glue.

Route Decorative Edge Detail

Optional: For a decorative look, use a router to curve over the edges.

Sand and Finish

Sand and finish or paint the rack as desired.

Hang

Locate the studs in the wall and install anchors.

Install Hinge

Install hinge on the bottom of the rack assembly. Then, install rack assembly to frame assembly with the hinge.

Install Hardware and Connect

Install one screw to rack assembly and one screw to the frame assembly and connect with the tether/chain.

Hang Frame

Hang the frame assembly using 2-1/2” cabinet screws.
