Before: 1950s Fixer Upper

With old wood cabinets, a drop ceiling, and dingy vinyl flooring, this kitchen, while large and open, hadn't been updated in decades. Keeping the same footprint, a clever and budget-friendly refacing of the cabinets, floors, countertops, and more, worked makeover magic.

After: Light and Bright With Personality

Now with cool light green painted cabinets, countertops painted to look like stone, a beadboard ceiling, stenciled floor, and new fixtures, the kitchen appears as a completely different space. The new look was accomplished with minimum budget and maximum ingenuity.

Clever Counters and Fixtures

The new white sink, dark bronze faucet, and brushed brass cabinet pulls step this kitchen up a notch, but that's where the splurging ends. Rather than replacing the countertop with expensive stone, the existing laminate countertop was painted to achieve a natural stone look.

Before: Wood, and More Wood

Before, the wood cabinets blended into the wood paneled walls and window frames, all the same tone.

Style and Substance

Now, the windows pop because they're framed in black paint, and the backsplash is covered in pretty patterned contact paper for extra color and dimension. Upper cabinets are replaced with open shelving made from industrial-style gas pipe, making the entire space feel more open.

Modern Update

This floor may appear to be new tile, but look closely, and you'll realize the hidden genius — it's actually the original floor stenciled over with a modern pattern.

Farmhouse Meets Space Age

The old drop ceiling made the space seem commercial and impersonal. Replaced with beadboard, the kitchen ceiling now has a fresh farmhouse feel. A midcentury modern sputnik-style light fixture adds some eccentricity.
