Determine Location and Pre-Wire

Shut off the power to the circuit. Use a stud finder to locate a joist and mark the outline of the fan on the ceiling. Cut the opening with a drywall knife or rotozip (Image 1).

Wire the fan according to the manufacturer's instructions (Image 2).

Attach the fan to the joist with screws (Image 3).

Step 1

Run the Ductwork

Allow a gap between the fan and insulation, if required by the manufacturer and local codes. Attach the duct to the fan body (Image 1).

Drive a nail through the roof to mark the center point of the ductwork (Image 2).

Trace a hole for the roof cap piece on the roof. Score the opening with a utility knife (Image 3).

Step 2

Install Exhaust Pipe

Follow the score line and cut the opening with a jigsaw (Image 1).

Remove shingles from around the opening (Image 2).

Apply roof cement on the cap flange and install by slipping under the shingles and nailing in place (Image 3).

Step 3

Attach Duct to Exhaust Pipe

Connect the ductwork from the fan to the roof cap (Image 1).

Secure the ductwork in place (Image 2).

Connect the wiring according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Connect power to a switch. Attach the face plate over the fan (Image 3).
