Step 1

Pry up Stones
Use a pry bar to lift uneven stones.
Step 2

Pour Builder's Sand
Create a new base with builder's sand. This coarse sand is very gritty and will hold the slates in place.
Step 3

Level the Slate
Leveling the slate is a matter of trial and error. You'll have to adjust the amount of sand and use a level to make sure the slate is level.
Step 4

Plant Moss Between Cracks
There are cracks in the slate patio, and we decided on a temporary solution — moss. By planting moss between the cracks, we give the patio an English feel, matching the style of the house and concealing the cracks.
