Fall Container Ideas to Celebrate the Season
Dress up your home with colorful container gardens filled with fall-weather favorites.
Kick off fall with a colorful flourish by filling pots and planters with annuals and perennials that thrive in cool weather. Choose plants that survive frosty evenings and Indian Summer days, and you’ll be rewarded with weeks of color. All you need to do is plant and water. Not sure where to start? Fill a pumpkin with soil and tuck in a 4-inch pot of Cool Wave White spreading pansy, which tolerates fall frosts with ease.
Try a mix of reliable fall performers, like pansy (Trailing Pansy Plentifall Lavender Blue) and white sweet alyssum (Alyssum Clear Crystal White Ball). A perennial grass, such as Luzula Lucius (snowy woodrush), lends frost-hardy height to the combination.
Fall Window Box
Give your window boxes a makeover with a colorful blend of annuals and perennials, including Honey Supertunia, Autumn Glow Bronze Mum and Dolce Crème Brulee Heuchera. If you garden in a region where winter brings frozen ground, aim to transplant perennials from pots to in-ground beds at least four weeks prior to the ground freezing. Mulch around plants heavily to protect against frost heave.
Go for Black
Black-leafed plants make ideal choices for fall containers. Select Primo ‘Black Pearl’ heuchera for a perennial that looks great in pots or beds. Pair it with orange and white pumpkins for an eye-catching Halloween show, then tuck it into a planting bed to savor that dark foliage for years to come.
Refresh Ornamental Grass
Renovate a summer container that paired annuals with purple fountain grass. Keep the grass, and replace annuals with flowering kale and a red-hued garden mum. This pot can hold its own well past Thanksgiving in Zones 6 and warmer—and may squeak through a Zone 5 November, if the temps don’t dive below freezing for days on end. In coldest zones, keep the grass all winter, and replace the other plantings by mid-November with evergreen boughs.
Cool Container Garden With Icee Blue Juniper
In mild winter regions, bright plants like croton and Sangria ornamental pepper can bring on cool season color. Other plants for fall color in any region include Graceful Grasses Vertigo Pennisetum, Autumn Glow Bronze mum, Songbird red cabbage, Icee Blue juniper and Black Cherry Supertunia.
Fall-Toned Tropical Heat
In mild winter regions, plants like croton and Sangria ornamental pepper fire up festive cool season color. These brightly tinted warm-weather beauties pair artfully with plants that can provide fall color in any region, including Graceful Grasses Vertigo Pennisetum, Autumn Glow Bronze mum, Songbird red cabbage, Icee Blue juniper and Black Cherry Supertunia.
Pastel Autumn Finery
Trade in fall’s bold hues for pastel-tinted bloomers that thrive in cool weather: Akila Lavender Shades osteospermum, Akila Purple osteospermum, Cool Wave Frost trailing pansy and Clear Crystals white alyssum. These flowers withstand light frosts and easily provide color through December in mild-winter regions.
