How to Sew a Rope Ornament Pillow
Switch out your fall throw pillows, and replace it with this easy-to-sew rope ornament pillow for the holiday season.
- 1/2 yard festive fabric
- jute rope
- polyester fiberfill
- tape measure
- thread and needle
- pinning needles
- sewing machine
Cut the Fabric
Measure and cut fabric into two pieces of 15” x 15” squares.
Make the Rope Ornament
Use a tape measure to find the center of one of the squares of fabric. Hand-stitch the end of the rope into that center point using several stitches to secure (Image 1). Begin twisting the rope around the center to create a circle, while stitching it into place (Image 2). Be sure to pull the rope taut while wrapping and stitch tightly (Image 3). Continue wrapping until you get the desired size ornament and finish off by stitching a straight line of rope up when you get to the midpoint of the fabric square (Image 4). This will be the top of the ornament. Cut the rope at the end, leaving one inch hanging over the end of the fabric (Image 5).
Sew the Pillow
Place the fabric squares together with the right side of each fabric square touching each other (the rope ornament should be sandwiched in between the two fabric squares). Pin the fabric pieces together. Sew the four sides together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance, leaving a 4-inch opening on one of the sides. When you get to the top of the ornament where the 1-inch of rope is hanging over the edge of the fabric square, sew slowly to allow the sewing machine to stitch over the rope. Tip: Place the pins perpendicular to allow for easier removal of the pins while sewing.
Prep Pillow for Stuffing
Trim the seam allowance down to 1/4-inch, and cut the corners of your pillow to prevent bunching when you turn the pillow inside out. Be careful not to cut any of the stitches. Also trim the extra rope from the top of the ornament. Pull the pillow through the 4-inch opening to turn the pillow right side out.
Stuff the Pillow
Take small sections of the filling, and fluff it prior to putting it into the pillow so you don’t end up with a lumpy pillow. To do this, pull the pieces of filling apart to break up the fibers before placing them into the pillow. To get the filling into the corners, use a stuffing tool (included in some fiberfill bags), or use a chopstick. Apply gentle pressure to press the filling into the corners, taking care not to press too hard. Continue to fill the pillow until you achieve the desired firmness and plushness.
Complete the Pillow
Sew the 4-inch opening by folding the ends of the fabric into the pillow and pinning into place. Then, sew the opening shut. Tie a bow with a piece of ribbon, and hand-stitch the ribbon to the top of the rope ornament. Embellish with buttons, ribbons or whatever else your holiday creativity inspires you to do.
