Introduction

Mason jars have gone wild! These sturdy glass jars are everywhere -- wine glasses, soap dispensers, makeshift chandeliers, wedding reception tables, pantry storage and on and on. Whether you love the throwback jars or want to poke fun at their comeback, this Mason jar Halloween costume is easy to DIY.
Step 1

Sketch Mason Jar on Foam Core
Sketch a Mason jar shape using a blue colored pencil onto a foam core board. When you're happy with it, trace with a blue permanent marker and erase any stray pencil marks.
Step 2

Use Template to Create Letters
Print the MASON JAR template onto blue card stock paper and cut out. Note that the letters print backwards so any lines will be hidden on the back.
Step 3

Cut It Out
Cut out the Mason jar shape using a craft knife and scissors.
Step 4

Glue the Letters Down
Glue the MASON JAR letters onto the front of the foam core jar.
Step 5

Wrap and Tape Vinyl
Wrap clear vinyl around the Mason jar, clipping the curves as you go. Tape the vinyl to the back using duct tape.
Step 6

Fasten Ribbon Necklace
Tape ribbon to the top-back of the jar to slip over the wearer's neck like a necklace.
Step 7

Make the Lid
To make the Mason jar band-and-lid-inspired hat, cut out one 15” circle from foam core. Cut 1” to 2” squares from the foam core scraps. Then cut a ring from the plastic poster board with a 15" diameter and 11” hole to create the Mason jar band.
Step 8

Glue Square Pieces Around Edges
Create a slightly raised rim by gluing the square scraps around the perimeter of the foam core circle. Then glue the poster board ring on top.
Step 9

Secure Side Strips
Cut two 3-1/2” lengthwise strips from the plastic poster board. Tape the pieces together to make the rim and use a glue gun to secure it onto the edge of the foam core circle.
Step 10

Use Small Squares to Add Texture
Cut small rectangles from scrap cardboard and glue around the rim of the band to add the ridges. Glue a 1/2" plastic poster board strip around the bottom.
Step 11

Make it Metallic with Spray Paint
Spray paint the lid silver and let dry. We used three light coats of hammered silver spray paint.
Step 12

Make Sits for Head Strap
Cut two slits into the top of the hat, the distance between slits should be about the width of the wearer’s head. Attach a safety pin to the end of the ribbon. Slip it into one slit from underneath and over the top and down through the other slit so the ends are inside the hat.
Step 13

Glue or Tape Head Padding
Add a bit of comfortable head padding using an old piece of towel, washcloth or batting. Glue or tape it securely. Put the hat on and tie a bow under the wearer's chin.
Step 14

Put It All Together
Grab a real Mason jar to go with your costume and go impress all your friends. Add a little bling by wearing metal lid-rings for bracelets.
