Introduction

Love the look of fancy designer rugs, but don’t have the budget to match your style? It is easy to paint a plain rug with the exact color and design you crave.
Step 1

Lay Out Rug
Lay the rug on a drop cloth or surface that you are not concerned about getting paint on. Make sure the rug is nice and flat. If the ends are curled up, place heavy objects on the ends to get them flat.
Step 2

Create Design with Masking Tape
Mark your design on the rug with the masking tape. Lines are the easiest to achieve. Just remember, the masking tape will be blank space. In other words, wherever the masking tape lies, the paint will NOT be underneath it.
Step 3

Create a Paint-Friendly Workspace
When you have finished taping the entire rug, and the tape is nice and flat, it is time to paint. (Again, make sure you are on a paint-friendly surface. The last thing you want is for your paint to drop onto your nice hardwood floors).
Step 4

It's Time to Paint
Apply the paint generously to the rug in the open spaces. Brush it on as even as possible. If needed, apply two coats until you reach your desired paint color. Allow the paint to dry in between each coat.
Step 5

Remove the Tape
When the paint is half-way dry, slowly remove the tape. It should come right up, leaving you with perfectly straight lines underneath. Allow the paint to fully dry.
Step 6

Voila!
Enjoy your new rug and bask in the glory of your crafty, awesome self.
