If you need a warm layer to complement your winter wardrobe, try a simple cape. This project takes minimal sewing and can be made in less than an hour. You can use several types of fabric for this project: wool, flannel or blends. Pick out colors and patterns you love and get ready to create custom-made clothes. Make sure that you pre-wash and dry the fabric before you start.

Fold the fabric in half, lengthwise. Make sure the bottoms of both sides line up.

Debbie Wolfe
Cut up the middle of the folded fabric on one side only. Stop at the top fold.

To minimize fraying, use pinking shears.

This step is optional. If you prefer a curved neckline, use a round object like a bowl or small plate to trace around the edge at the top of the "V' of the neck to give it a curve.

Debbie Wolfe
Fold the edge in 1/4 inch and sew.

The sleeve line needs to be sewn on the wrong (inside) of the cape. Fold the fabric in half with the wrong side facing out. Do not line up the bottom of the cape evenly. Instead, offset it about 6 inches (make it longer in the back). This will make the cape look less boxy when you wear it. Measure a 4 inch line about a foot from where the shoulder fold is on both sides.

Debbie Wolfe
Sew a 4-inch line for the sleeves according to the diagram.

To add a fray to the bottom of the cape, pull out a few threads to start the fray.

Debbie Wolfe
A pin helps to pull out additional threads.

If you want the fray to not continue further up the cape, sew a straight line across the top where the fray begins.

Debbie Wolfe
Use the cape as a light, extra layer. Flannel is warm and will keep you cozy.

The cape is flattering and makes an attractive top layer on cool days.
