Rustic Meets Refined

An apple green paneled wall creates a modern headboard in this rustic meets refined master bedroom. The green pops against the warm white walls, and the white ceiling and trim with gray undertones. Large custom wall art by artist Bert John pulls in the green from the headboard and the warmer tones used in the space.

Full Height Storage

The nightstands and built-in bookcases made from white oak and exposed butternut wood on each side of the bed were a DIY Network special project. The nightstand and bookcase cabinet doors include hand notches in place of traditional hardware for a handmade look.

Stylish Swing Arm Lamp

A polished nickel swing arm lamp with fabric shade offers illumination on each side of the bed. The wall-mounted lamps help keep the top of the nightstands free for books, fresh flowers and other bedroom essentials.

Thoughtfully Curated Look

The built-in bookcase shelves with front edge butternut banding offer display storage for books, framed artwork, a touch of greenery and collectibles for a curated look. Woven boxes keep smaller items grouped together on the shelves.

Attractive Area Rug

A gray and crème area rug under the bed adds color, pattern and warmth over the master bedroom’s prefinished and distressed mountain oak floor.

Double Duty Stools

A green and white fringed throw for chilly nights sits over one of the two taupe stools with nailhead trim placed at the foot of the bed. The easy-to-move stools offer flexible seating and a place to change shoes.

Pretty Pendant

A black with gold tone finish pendant and a round wire basket cage around the bulbs provides simple and elegant illumination above the master bed.

Throw Pillows

A striped blue and crème pillow paired with two blue cotton pillows with subtle pattern on top of the bed add color contrast for the apple green headboard wall above.

Clever Upcyling

The modern headboard wall, a focal point painted apple green, was installed behind the bed with glue and limited nails using leftover prefinished and distressed oak flooring from the home renovation.

Vertical Elements

Designer Elizabeth Demos says by bringing the apple green custom headboard wall and bookcases all the way to the ceiling, it offers a way to draw the eye up and make the bedroom feel taller and airy.

Color Contrast

The white paint with gray undertones for the built-ins offers contrast for both the exposed wood and the custom apple green headboard wall.

Natural Beauty

The grain of the butternut wood adds natural beauty to the doors of the built-in nightstands and cabinet doors on the bookcases.

Bi-Folding Glass Doors

Large bi-folding glass doors connect the master bedroom to a seating area that was created when the home's main deck was extended, providing a great spot to enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or just soak in the impressive views.

Indoor/Outdoor Experience

The thermally controlled aluminum bi-folding glass doors form a six-foot opening that allows fresh air and natural light inside for an appealing indoor/outdoor experience. Flowing drapes over the glass doors were hung higher than normal, another vertical element that cheats the eye and makes the bedroom feel taller.

Rustic Warmth

The 3/4-inch by 5-inch prefinished and distressed mountain oak floor adds rustic warmth to the well-detailed master bedroom.

Sleek Slipper Chair

An upholstered armless slipper chair in the corner offers a spot to read or enjoy the outdoor views. A four-drawer chest with weathered oak offers storage for bedroom essentials.

Charming Collectibles

A blue table lamp with a white shade, framed art, a vintage marble tray and succulents that add a touch of nature decorate the top of the chest.

Modern Style

The chest’s weathered wood is accentuated with brass and nickel rims, which gives the piece an appealing modern edge.

Climate Control

Part of the home's ductless heating and cooling system, the indoor ceiling cassette and grill in the master bedroom offers wide air distribution and an unobtrusive style that blends with the surrounding ceiling.

User-Friendly Layout

This wide shot of the master bedroom shows the user-friendly layout of the space, with a pocket door that leads to the adjoining master bath and another pocket door that opens to the well-organized master closet.

Ultimate Walk-In Closet

The interior walls of the master closet feature the same apple green color used for the master bedroom's modern headboard wall. A combination of drawers, hanging storage, and open shelves offer organized storage for clothing and accessories.

Storage for Shoes

A pair of white slim shoe cabinets with sturdy epoxy-coated steel construction provide easy-access but out-of-the-way storage for shoes.

Space-Saving Solution

The white shoe cabinets feature three drop-front drawers with a bar along the front that keeps shoes in place when the drawers are opened.

Handy Jewelry Drawer

A slide-out jewelry drawer has dividers that keep earrings, delicate bracelets and other small pieces of jewelry separated and easy to find.

Accessories on Display

The top of the white shoe cabinets can be used to hold sunglasses, handbags and a potted plant for a touch of nature.

Soothing Space

With a light and airy feel, an inviting bed and easy access to the outdoors, the master bedroom provides a soothing space to rest and enjoy the natural beauty of this Vermont retreat.
