Stylish Open Kitchen

What designer Elizabeth Demos calls her favorite room at DIY Network Ultimate Retreat 2017, the upscale industrial kitchen with white walls and gray undertones sits open to the dining room and enjoys a strong connection with the home’s main deck outside.

Preserving Views

Open shelves offer easy-access storage for everyday dishes and glassware. "I didn't want to do upper cabinets because I thought it would distract from the view on that side, and we had plenty of storage without them," says designer Elizabeth Demos.

Local Wood Shelves

The open shelves with iron brackets are made from butternut wood from Vermont’s Shelburne Farms, a nonprofit education center for sustainability that is also a 1,400-acre working farm and National Historic Landmark.

User-Friendly Drawers

The kitchen’s well-placed soft close drawers with transitional style black nickel pulls keep essentials hidden away off the counters, but within easy reach.

Attractive Accessories

A ceramic bread box and a vintage woven tray are some of the stylish accessories that dot the kitchen counters.

Stainless Dishwasher

The built-in stainless dishwasher to the right of the sink has an observation window that provides a view of the cleaning action inside. The dishwasher also includes an innovative filter feature that offers peak cleaning performance in less time with less water.

Single Bowl Sink

The kitchen's white under-mount single bowl sink crafted from enameled cast iron offers plenty of space to soak and wash cookware, with a sloped base to a single offset drain that minimizes pooling of water.

Beautiful Bridge Faucet

The sink's two-hole deck-mount bridge faucet with spout and side spray offers distinctive modern style with easy-to-use features. The faucet's two lever handles allow separate control of hot and cold water.

Handsome Hardware

The black nickel knobs on the kitchen's base cabinets have clean lines and a transitional style that provide the perfect finishing touch.

Maximized Storage

The butternut wood shelves that wrap around the kitchen’s interior corner to maximize storage fit with the industrial style of the space.

Warm Wood Details

Wood cutting boards and a bowl of fresh fruit sit on the kitchen's attractive maple butcher block counters and add warmth to the space.

Organized Storage

The open shelves make it easy to keep entertaining essentials like bowls and platters close by on the lower shelf, with decorative accessories used less often placed on the top shelf.

Color Contrast

The large casement windows over the sink feature dark sashes that offer dramatic contrast for the kitchen’s polished/high gloss frost white tile.

Stylish Illumination

A custom-made globe pendant over the kitchen island makes a bold statement while also illuminating the space.

Terrific Tile

The backsplash with rectangular polished/high gloss frost white tile and dark gray grout behind the range and sink areas goes all the way to the ceiling to accentuate the height of the open kitchen. The backsplash fits with the kitchen's design philosophy of building contrasts by using light and dark tones.

Durable Counters

The kitchen's maple butcher block countertops offer the beauty and durability of a denser hardwood, with a close grain that makes it easier to keep the work surface clean.

Top-Notch Gas Range

Meals are easy to prepare with the kitchen's stainless gas range with true convection, sleek front-set controls and no-fuss burner grates. The European design wall-mounted stainless range hood above features a multi speed control for quiet and effective performance.

High Gloss Tile

The polished/high gloss frost white tile backsplash adds visual interest with a surface that variegates a bit, paired with a dark gray grout that complements the kitchen cabinets. In addition to accentuating the height of the room, the tiles in a longer, non-traditional 3x12-inch size also help visually lengthen the kitchen.

Custom Island

The kitchen’s custom island that was a DIY Network special project has a hammered black metal base with bottom shelf and small overhang countertop height bar that was softened up with a white oak top with a polyurethane finish. Blue counter stools offer seating for casual meals. Western Red Cedar beams added to the already vaulted ceiling for visual interest were treated with a combination of steel wool, vinegar and black tea for a weathered look.

Updated Sink Windows

New energy-efficient windows over the sink replace existing peak windows. "To bring the house back in line with the overall architectural look we were going for, we flattened the top and brought up the sill eight inches," says project manager Dylan Eastman. "That gave us not only the countertop height, but a small backsplash area. The two outer windows are tapered to open and the middle window is fixed, so it allows us to get cross-ventilation off the lake."

Hard-Wearing Floor

The kitchen’s gray oak porcelain tile floor offers both beauty and the durability needed for this busy space in the home. Hooks added to the range side of the island offer hanging storage for pans.

Local Flavor

White oak from a local shop all joined on site was used to create the island top, with an organic feel waterfall on the side of the island creatively designed to resemble the shape of the state of Vermont.

Special Feature

Two drop-in stainless steel steamer trays added to a cut made in the top of the center island provide handy planters for kitchen herbs.

French Door Refrigerator

The kitchen's stainless steel, bottom-mount smart refrigerator maximizes storage capacity for both fresh and frozen foods. A smart app eliminates common problems, like the freezer door being accidentally left open. A wing wall built with Western Red Cedar to the left of the refrigerator acts as a partition and hides the side of the refrigerator from the dining room view.

Advanced Technology

This smart refrigerator includes advanced technology that creates the ideal temperature and humidity levels, and recessed LED interior lighting that makes it easy to find what you need.

Good Flow

The custom island with industrial-style blue counter stools for visiting with the cook or enjoying a snack allows plenty of space for good traffic flow in and out of the kitchen.

On the Wall

A round industrial-style clock, framed botanical art and the remote control for the kitchen's ductless heating and cooling system sit on the wall by the light switches and glass door to the deck outside

Light and Airy Feel

The kitchen's thermally controlled sliding aluminum glass door in anodized bronze fits into the existing framed opening. The door leads right to the home's main deck outside, a space made for enjoying the natural beauty of this Vermont property.

Patterned Floor

The kitchen's gray oak porcelain tile flooring was done in a clean intersected straight run that reflects the look of an upscale rustic barn. This offers an unexpected look without the difficulty of a more complicated herringbone pattern for the average DIYer.

Mix of Materials

A well-selected combination of natural materials mixed with industrial elements gives this open kitchen a balanced look.
