Engineering, architecture and design students from 19 universities around the world are challenged to build efficient and functional solar homes to display on the Mall in Washington DC, across from the US Capitol. These homes must produce all their power solely from the sun and be able to function as livable family structures. After being judged on design criteria and engineering performance, the teams are scored on their house's ability to maintain temperature, heat water, cook a meal, wash clothes and power an electric vehicle. Scores in ten design and performance categories will add up to determine the solar decathlon winner!
