This Houston couples' back yard is a barren wasteland, the only ones who venture out there are their two dogs. With the mild climate, this couple yearns for a space to entertain and dine outside, but want it to reflect their funky personalities. Matt takes the challenge and delivers an elegant space with eclectic overtones. He adds a 500 square foot paver patio with cedar pergola and a multicolor wood burning fire place. He drops glass pendants from cedar posts over a huge cedar table topped with zinc and adds artificial turf and bamboo around the perimeter for privacy.

A sloped, messy yard has first-time homeowners baffled, until Matt Blashaw offers to help them take advantage of the built-in elevation. Matt shows the outdoorsy couple how to terrace their muddy hillside, and use the slope to create a backyard river, waterfall and fishpond that can all be regulated by remote control. A do-it-yourself footbridge establishes an attractive walkway across the river. Flagstone pathways lead to new areas for outdoor seating. A series of easy-to-install stone walls creates new space for gravel patios, a sunken campfire pit, a natural stone bench, and pine forest plantings. A couple of first-time homeowners are confused by the shape of their oblong backyard, until Matt Blashaw offers to help them add new dimension and features to the oddly shaped space. A giant stone fireplace with a cozy hearth highlights a welcoming seating area on a new patio shaded by giant umbrella planters. Matt and his crew show the homeowners even more ways to mold concrete into a 'stone' water fountain, and a footbridge that is shaped and stained to look like natural wood. Carpentry projects include a DIY archery wall, wine barrel bar, and a dining table with a twist: a heavy-duty tabletop featuring a stone Lazy Susan.
