11 Things to Know About Chase and Brock Jurgensen

The bearded bros are coming to DIY with an all-new series.

Chase and Brock Jurgensen are bringing their beards, flannel and style to DIY Network with the all-new series, Rustic Renovation. From renovating a Quonset Hut to dreaming up one of a kind creations made from reclaimed barn wood, these brothers and partners in crime can do it all.

Don’t believe us? You’ll just have to tune in to the new series to see for yourself. For now, get the skinny on the Jurgensen brothers, below. (Are you looking for another Jurgensen sibling? I volunteer.)

They’re brothers AND best friends.

Growing up two years apart, the Minnesota natives were inseparable. Chase says the two have “always been interested in the same things.” Although that’s not to say there isn’t a little bit of a rivalry there…

Both claim to be their parents’ favorite...

“It’s pretty clear [who’s the favorite]. I don’t even know if I need to say anything,” says Chase.

They wouldn’t want to work with anyone else.

“We've always been together and been close as friends and obviously, brothers,” says Chase. “But it's being able to do what we love and work together at the same time. It's why I got into business for myself, because I want to choose who I work with. If I don't like them, I don't have to work with them.”

“Luckily, I get to work with my brother, which works out well. It [involved] some growing pains to find out what our strengths are – it's not something we knew right away."

They started young in the building business.

“We would always go and take nails and hammers from our dad's garage,” says Brock. “We lived in a house that had a nice, wooded backyard. We would go into the woods and build our treehouse. We were like 10 or 11.”

Their early days involved daddy daycare.

Papa Jurgensen would take the boys to work with him, and that meant the pair had to get creative when it came to playtime.

“Chase and I spent a lot of time in lobbies, parking lots, hotels,” says Brock. “You didn't have cell phones back then either so you really only had a VCR to play movies or we'd go outside and have to play around on a commercial lot.”

Their father, an entrepreneur, would take them along to trade shows and according to Chase, he also wasn’t shy about putting them to work as soon as they were the “right size". (But hard work paid off, right?)

DIY runs in the family.

“My mom was always moving things around the house,” says Brock. “I think I can remember the first time I moved a couch for my mom. We moved that couch about 4 times up and down the stairs... My mom was also a pretty big DIYer.”

Renovation is their sport of choice.

The guys might look like they’d be big Vikings or Twins fans, but they’ve never had an interest in sports. Instead, it’s all about their careers and, of course, family.

“We don't fish or hunt [either]. I did recently purchase a couple of shotguns and I don't mind shooting sporting clays,” says Chase. “That's fun.”

“But we started this business with no money and probably in the hole. We've built our lives around our careers so, it's weird… And I have a family. That's my jam.”

They’re proud Minnesotans.

These two are all about the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The best part of living there?

“The four seasons. There's always something new here; it's never stagnant,” says Brock.

“That sets Minnesota apart from a lot of other places,” adds Chase. “We do have 110 degree days and we have -25 degree days. As you go through the seasons, each time you come out of winter, you feel like you have a new set of leaves, too. You feel the change and you change with the seasons. It's almost like every spring, you can start over again. I couldn't imagine living anywhere else... it keeps you on your toes.”

Of course, they have their favorite Minnesota slang words.

“You betcha. I put that in my email,” says Chase. “And I do say it on purpose just because it's so Minnesotan.”

“Dontcha know. And you betcha,” says Brock.

“And yah. Generally, I say 'yah' a lot. Yah sure, you betcha.”

They’ve uncovered some bizarre treasures while renovating.

Recently, while renovating his own home, Chase had an unexpectedly spiritual encounter.

“We just remodeled a house that we moved into in April, and inside the wall I found a statue of Jesus. When I covered the wall back up, I left it there. I thought, 'you know what, Jesus is in the wall for a reason and I'm going to put it back.'”

“Don’t mess with Jesus,” says Brock.

If they weren’t renovating and building, they’re not sure what they’d be doing.

“I don't know. To be honest with you. It would need to be a job that's as spontaneous, fun, changing, exciting, challenging as this career,” says Chase.

As kids, they wanted to be a zoologist (Chase) and a computer animator (Brock). So, there’s always that back-up plan.
