About the show

Bryan Baeumler, host of Disaster DIY, is used to applying his tough love to the uninformed, misinformed and just plain lazy do-it-yourselfers of the world. But now he's got his own mega DIY project: building his own home from scratch in just six months. From the demolition of his present bungalow to rebuilding a new state-of-the-art home, we share the joy and pain from Bryan's humorous point of view. Bryan's passion to teach others building and renovating skills is put to the test as he teaches his apprentice the essentials of home construction. We also get to know Bryan's family who must adapt to the additional demands and pressures. While Bryan is all about structure and build, his wife, Sarah, is all about finish and function. Conflicts arise as they try to translate to each other their different visions and priorities for their dream house. Miscalculations, novice errors and sloppy apprenticing all wear on the frustrations of Bryan, Sarah and the crew. All these potential pitfalls add to the weekly drama and challenge of building your own home.

Design, Destroy, Rebuild

Even for a veteran contractor like Bryan, knocking down a house is not as straightforward as it appears. Small delays add up big time ? from miscalculating the total amount of waste removal, to obtaining proper building permits. All create extra demands on Bryan who is struggling to get the house's concrete footings into the ground, a vital first step. At the same time, Bryan is mentoring a new apprentice and struggling to keep his wife's lofty housing ambitions to a minimum.

Up In Flames

With the house's foundation set and the wall framing on deck, the construction site is quickly transforming from a two-dimensional design plan, to a three-dimensional dream home. On site, Bryan is battling issues like running out of materials and conflicting opinions with his wife, Sarah, concerning the exterior finishes for the house. Off site, Sarah has also recruited Bryan to help build a stage for her dance studio's end-of-season recital. See how Bryan copes with the overwhelming demands and whether he gives in to the temptation to give up before he's barely begun.

Down in the Trenches

After the house is framed, the mechanicals of the home are ready to be roughed in and installed. Even with Bryan's pick of trusty tradesmen by his side, a recent change in plumbing code is throwing a wrench in plans to forge ahead. Any delay drives cost upwards and with time ticking away, the house now more than ever demands Bryan's full attention. But a previous commitment to Habitat for Humanity pulls Bryan away from the site leaving his apprentice Adam to prove to Bryan that he can be trusted to oversee the site while his boss is away. Things don't go according to plan and Bryan returns to a huge dilemma that takes priority over building his house.

Sink or Swim

A feisty female has it out for Bryan and this time it is not his wife Sarah. Mother Nature has dropped some ill-timed storms and heavy rain that causes a wave of delays. With the electrical and other mechanicals roughed-in, the house is in critical need to get the roof, windows and doors installed so the house can be watertight. Multiple thunderstorms and lack of electricity combine into a perfect storm of factors that create serious flooding in the basement. Though the elements have been against Bryan, he still plans on surprising his wife Sarah with a pool in the backyard.

Gyprock and Roll

Bryan is getting a taste of what it's like to have his wife as a customer. Bryan is used to dealing with a client's indecisiveness, and his wife Sarah is no different. During a routine walk-through of the house, Sarah and his designer Rebecca suggest switching the layout of the house, a change Bryan strongly disagrees with especially since the house is at the drywall stage. Sarah and Rebecca are well into choosing interiors and furnishings and struggle to maintain tight delivery deadlines and above all, stay within budget. The overwhelming pressure mounts, and though the house's walls are up, things are about to hit a wall.

Dollars and Fence

Bryan and Sarah have to face up to the financial realities of building a house, creating tension in the Baeumler household. Meanwhile, Bryan has a whole backyard to landscape. Adam gets a lesson in how to build a fence, while Rebecca finds ways to cut Sarah's spending. It all ends with a stunning reveal of the backyard and a lesson learned on budgeting.

Kitchen Showdown

Bryan and Sarah plan their ideal kitchen, but things don't go according to plan when Bryan discovers how much Sarah spent on the appliances. To make amends Sarah helps Bryan install the backsplash. Meanwhile, Adam learns how to install hardwood flooring, and then learns how to pull it all up again as Bryan discovers a serious flaw.

Boys and Toys

Bryan gets to do his space in the house, the basement or as he calls it the ''man cave''. Not content with the usual big screen TV, Bryan installs a huge projection home theatre, complete with a retractable screen. He also builds his own private steam room, using soap stone and a lot of Adam's hard labor. Sarah and designer Rebecca's attention is focused on paint colors for the house. But Sarah's faith in Rebecca is shaken after a certain shade of paint makes Sarah turn green.

Paint in the Butt

Bryan is done with the downstairs and now he can start work on the final part of the house, the master bedroom and en suite. Once a huge fireplace is installed, Bryan and Adam get work tiling the bedroom wall. Sarah and Rebecca try and sneak a paint color past Bryan. In the bathroom a quick rethink is needed as the tub no longer will fit, and Bryan gets to see Sarah's choice in lighting fixtures.

End in Site

The house is almost done. The front yard and the garage are the last places to be finished, but Bryan is going away and not going to have time to complete the space. Sarah comes up with a plan to surprise Bryan as long as Adam agrees to help. Furniture begins to arrive and Bryan finally gets to see what Sarah has been buying over the last few months.

House of Sarah

After six months, it's all done. Bryan and Sarah walk through the house and reminisce about the good and the bad times. We see room by room the incredible work done by Bryan and his team.
