Searching for America's Most Desperate Landscape 2014

Jason Cameron searches for America's Most Desperate Landscape 2014, and after combing through hundreds of pictures and videos he and the Desperate Landscapes crew settle on one incredibly ugly landscape in Helotes, Texas just outside of San Antonio. Jason brings his crew and supplies to Connie and Jason Vela's home to fix up their horrible landscape, but this time there's a cool twist. Web users on diynetwork.com cast their votes on what should be included in the Vela's new landscape. From the fountain to the front door, America has spoken and the Vela's are getting a dream landscape with the voters' seal of approval. This massive makeover includes a new patio, an outdoor oven, a fountain and so much more. With just two days to tackle the project, Jason hopes to take the Vela's landscape from one of the worst in America to one of the first.

America's Most Desperate Landscape 2012: Front Walkway After

The Stochmal's house, built some 50 years earlier by Cas Stochmal's father, gets reinvigorated with a well-deserved upgrade. As a tribute to the home's history and the care that went into the structure years before, a section at the top and center of the new walkway is fashioned from bricks that were part of the home's original hand-laid brick walk. Cas' cherished stone lions were also preserved and incorporated into the newly designed front entrance.

Beaded Napkin Rings

The tablescape's coastal details continue with printed paisley napkins and beaded napkin rings.

American's Most Desperate Landscape 2012: Driveway View

The transformation includes a completed and newly paved driveway, specially designed stairs with extra-wide 14-inch tread and a completely reconfigured walk-up to the home's front door.

Summerwine-Ninebark

Summerwine-Ninebark is a deciduous shrub prized for its dark purple foliage and white flowers in summer. It's often used as a "dark" background for lighter colored plants. 'Summerwine' is very cold tolerant. It grows about 4-6 feet tall and wide. It prefers full sun to light shade. It produces best foliage color and flowers in full sun. USDA Zones 2-8

Curb Appeal: Landscaping and Sidewalks

A well-laid, landscaped walkway leads from the driveway to the house.

Major Curb Appeal

The new front stoop features furniture, rug and plants that make the walkway more inviting. The new blue door pops against the white house.

Blacked-leaved Ligularia

Black-leaved ligularia or Ligularia 'Brit-Marie Crawford' was named one of the top perennials for 2006. It has a glossy maroon foliage with orange daisy-like flowers. Grows about three to four feet tall and spreads about the same. Needs full sun to part shade and prefers moist soil and shade. USDA Zones 4-9

Disaster Deck

The Riefenbergs love to entertain but can't use their deck because it's unstable. One of the posts doesn't touch the ground and is actually resting on another block of wood.

No Place to Play

The backyard is no place for the Riefenberg's dogs Sonny and Cooper to run around. Large boulders are scattered throughout the yard.
