Country Cottage — Butcher Block

Episode DKTN-108

This kitchen is in a 1960's two-story home owned by Jason, Marjorie and their three young daughters. They bought the house just six months ago -- foregoing charm for a beautiful yard and a better school district. Now they're trying to add some character and make this new place feel like home. They're excited to start work on the dreary kitchen.

They'll tell you that the only thing going for it right now is the generous size. Dark cabinets and peeling yellow laminate countertops are arranged in a "U" shape with mismatched appliances completing the horse-shoe. On the opposite wall, a cluttered desk sits next to the refrigerator and broom closet. The worn vinyl floor has definitely seen better days, and the eating area that adjoins the space just isn't wide enough for a table and chairs so this kitchen is ready for an update. We're going to do just that giving it a great new country cottage style.

In this episode, the old mess that has accumulated over the years is cleared out: removing the outdated appliances, the cabinet doors and drawers, and the worn countertop and sink. The cabinets are reconfigured for the new layout. Then a beautiful southern yellow heart pine floor is put in over the old vinyl floor.
