Homeowners Marshall and Jeanine have called their walk-out rambler "home" for the last 14 years. They've spent most of those years raising their young boys, working and not paying much attention to the decor of their home. Finally, a few years ago they started updating it, bringing a nice contemporary style to the living room and dining room. But now the kitchen sticks out like a sore thumb. The worn cabinets, outdated wallpaper, blue sink, ice-cold ceramic tile and tired appliances need help. So DIY 's Kitchen Renovations host Paul Ryan is going to give it a sleek contemporary style to keep pace with the rest of the home.

After developing a plan with the kitchen designer, Ryan and the homeowners emptied the kitchen and started tearing out the old cabinets and countertop, the tile floor and busted through the pantry wall to gain some valuable space for the new island. The result in this first of four installments is a nice clean workspace, ready to give the new kitchen a fresh start.
