        Tips for Building a Gate

A new fence and gate provide a nice accent for a landscape. Here are some tips on building the gate.
        • Time

          Under Half Day

        • Price Range

          $100 - $250

        • Difficulty

          Moderate

        In this Project you will:

        Step 1: Build the Frame

Build a gate frame one-half inch smaller than the space you want to fill. Install a "Z" brace from the bottom of the hinge side running up to the latch side to provide extra support.

        Step 2: Cut the Lumber

Make arrow cuts on each end of the lumber and fit it neatly into the corners of the frame. Or, you can cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of the lumber and fit the brace that way as well. Secure the brace with wood glue and wood screws.

        Step 3: Install the Hinges

Position the gate on the fence post. Mark holes for the hardware, drill pilot holes and hang the gate.
