        Tiling a Backsplash

This DIY Basic will provide tips on tiling a backsplash.

Step 1: Watch an Overview Video

        Step 2: Prep the Area

The starting point for the backsplash should be the center of the wall or a point centered behind the sink.

If the countertop is level, use it as the reference line for the first row of tiles. Otherwise, snap a chalk line on the wall one inch up from the counter.

If the backsplash is below a window, remove the wood trim.

        Step 3: Spread the Adhesive

Find the center of the wall. Then spread a small amount of adhesive in the center.

Tile adhesive dries quickly — don’t spread more than you can cover in 15 minutes.

        Step 4: Lay the Tiles

Lay the first tile, and work your way to each end.

Leave any extra space at the ends until all the rows are set.

You can use a wet saw to cut partial pieces. To mark the cut line, turn the tile over and set it across the space.

        Step 5: Grout the Tiles

Hold the grout float at a 45-degree angle and push grout into the joints. Let the grout dry for 24 hours.

Wipe off the haze and use a foam brush to apply grout sealer.
