Rustic Elegance

This kitchen brings old and new together in a sophisticated manner. Cabinetmaker/kitchen designer John McGilvray worked with the homeowners to combine reclaimed materials with top-of-the-line features in their Tennessee lakefront house.

Historical and Sentimental

The wood on the hood vent and the corbels and siding on the center island were all once part of a barn that stood on the home's property. "The land has been in family for several generations, so it meant a lot to the homeowners that they were able to incorporate a piece of family history in their new modern home," says McGilvray. A couple of nooks were tucked underneath the island countertop to provide extra storage and a little architectural interest.

The Mantel Too

The reclaimed barn wood was also used on the family room fireplace which sits opposite the open floor-plan kitchen.

Custom Hutch

To give this brand new kitchen warmth with a time-worn feel, McGilvray built an antique-style hutch. “Using freestanding furniture in the kitchen instead of more wall cabinets adds a shot of personality and makes the space feel homier,” says McGilvray.

Good Planning

“Before you build, determine exactly how much cabinet space you’ll need and pre-plan the placement of dishes and groceries,” advises McGilvray. “You want function near storage.” These homeowners keep their everyday dishes in the hutch, so the dishwasher was placed in the island to the right of the sink to make unloading easy and painless.

Island Farmhouse Sink

Doing dishes isn’t such a bad chore when you can enjoy lake and mountain views beyond your windows.

Mix and Match

The fridge is integrated into a wall of cabinetry for a seamless look while a mix of countertop materials — marble and wood — add color and dimension.

Bright and Beautiful

A variety of lighting provides style as well as function. Under-cabinet task lighting and overhead recessed ceiling lights help illuminate the cooking and prep spaces, while the rustic-style chandelier and in-cabinet LEDs set the mood and make the room sparkle and glow.

It's All in the Details

The center island’s soft blue finish adds some lakeside country charm and contrasts beautifully with reclaimed lumber corbels.

Mini Pantry

The tall pull-out cabinet next the fridge is open on both sides so it is convenient and easy to see what you’ve got in stock.

Quality Materials

Behind the cabinet doors, convenient pull-out drawers make it easy to find what you’re looking for. Under-mount drawer slides were used so all you see is the natural dove-tail wood. The cabinet’s pulls and knobs are all high-quality brushed nickel.

Made at Home

The wood used to make the hutch, the cabinet drawer boxes and the crown molding were all sourced locally in Tennessee. Even the marble countertops came from a nearby quarry.

Plenty of Cooking Options

A microwave, wall oven and warming drawer are all stacked up in the corner making it easy to transfer casseroles and dishes from one to the other.

Clever Storage

No inch of space is wasted. A pull-out spice rack is housed at the end of the island across from the stove.
