Garages Converted: Work and Workout Spaces

Bill Goldberg and the Garage Mahal crew refashion two garages — one into a home gym and another into a multifunctional home office.

Scott and Adrienne, both actors in daytime soaps, have a garage they use only for, um, "storage." What they really need, rather than a traditional garage, is a home gym so their daily fitness workouts don't necessitate trips to local health clubs.

The first task is to clear out the clutter and create a clean slate to reconfigure and open up the space. This garage-to-gym makeover involves cutting a new entryway from the house into the garage and raising the ceiling to create a vaulted space. Inside the house, the new entrance will be concealed by a custom sliding bookcase.

The converted garage space features energy-efficient sliding glass doors to replace the old standard garage doors. New paint, lighting, rubberized floors, modular storage and workbench set the backdrop for the transformation that also includes a climbing wall and state-of-the-art workout equipment.

To welcome the latest addition to their family, the Brunelles are turning their home office into a nursery. The downside: they'll need to relocate their office. The solution: convert their garage — seen here in its original state.

The garage space gets broken up with pocket doors and a newly framed room that houses two computer workstations and added storage cabinets. The old rubberized floor cover is replaced with interlocking bamboo flooring. New skylights let in natural light and help give the space a more open feel.

With the computer work area enclosed with bamboo walls and frosted glass doors, the remainder of the space is left open as a living area complete with new bookshelves, sofa, area rug, flat-screen TV and decorative accents.

There's enough clearance above the newly partitioned office space to accommodate a utility loft held by a structural support beam. The beam is made from compressed wood elements derived from a highly renewable variety of trees. It's actually stronger than a beam cut from a single timber.
