Tools & Materials

Hardwood flooring
Underlayment
Construction adhesive
Nailer/compressor
T-molding
Bi-level molding
Baby threshold or end cap

Step 2

Getting Started

To prevent warping, acclimate boards to installation space for 1 to 5 days prior to installation.

For thermal insulation and sound and moisture control, put underlayment over subfloor with moisture barrier side on top.

Snap chalk line for aligning first row of boards.

Pro Tip

Hardwood floors can last a lifetime if properly installed.

Step 3

Installation

Install boards randomly.

As you lay boards, pull from several cartons to mix color, grain, and tone.

Pro Tip

To keep seams from lining up row to row, offset board ends by at least 6 inches.

Step 4

Wrapping Up

To transition between level wood and tile floors, use T-molding.

To drop to lower level, install bi-level reducer.

To transition to carpet, install baby threshold or end cap.

Pro Tip

Leave expansion gap and glue molding to tile only to allow wood flooring to expand and contract.
