Introduction

The beauty of laying turf is that it produces an instant lawn. It can be laid at most times of the year but will need regular watering during spring and summer. Although it is more expensive than seed, it can be walked on only a few days after laying.

Step 1

Lay First Roll of Sod Along Straight Edge

Prepare the site thoroughly.

Be sure to ensure the surface is level. Then, roll the turf out and once in place, firmly tamp down with the back of a rake. If possible, the first row of turf should be laid along a straight edge, such as a path.

Step 2

Trim Sod to Fit Boundaries

Lay the turf beyond the boundaries of the lawn.

Taking this step will allow it to be trimmed later. Place small pieces of turf away from the edge of the lawn to prevent them from drying out.

Step 3

Butt Sod Pieces Together to Form Tight Seam

Line up the ends.

Make sure each piece is butted up closely to each other and pressed down firmly to prevent them from drying out. The joints of each row should be staggered, similar to brickwork, since this creates a more sturdy lawn.

Step 4

Brush Top Soil Into Seams of Sod Pieces

Keep your feet off the turf.

Stand on a wooden plank so that you do not damage the newly laid turf. Once the lawn is finished, use a stiff broom to brush a good quality top-dressing into any cracks. No mulch should be left on the surface.

Step 5

Watering Helps Establish New Sod

Water the lawn thoroughly.

Do this frequently over the next few days to draw the roots down into the soil and to help it establish. Once the lawn starts to root, it can have its first cut at the mower's maximum height.
