Tools and Materials

For this project, you will need 3/8 yards woven fabric, 1-1/2 yards of 3-inch-wide silk ribbon, 1-1/2 yards of 1-inch-wide silk ribbon, 5/8 yard silk string, Poly-Fil, basic sewing essentials (scissors, pins or binder clips, thread, sewing machine) and Fray Check (not shown).

Step 1

Cut Fabric Squares

Cut two 11” squares of fabric. These will be your pillow front and back pattern pieces. Cut two 24” pieces of the 3-inch ribbon and two 24" pieces of the 1-inch ribbon.

Step 2

Attach Ribbon

Lay one of the 1-inch ribbons directly on top of one of the 3-inch ribbon pieces. Match up the side edge. Place the ribbon on top of one pillow pattern piece, in the very center of the pillow along the side edge. Pin in place and then sew along the side edge using a 1/4” seam allowance. Repeat for other ribbon pieces on the other side of the pillow.

Step 3

Pin Squares Together

Place one pattern piece on top of the other pattern piece, right sides together. Pin around all side edges. Make sure the ribbon is safely secure in the middle. Sew all around the sides, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning right-side out.

Step 4

Turn Right Side Out

Turn the pillow right side out through the 4-inch opening. Iron it flat.

Step 5

Stuff Pillow

Stuff the pillow with Poly-Fil. You want the pillow to be nice and smooshy, not too full or too stiff.

Step 6

Sew Opening

When you are satisfied with the stuffing amount, pin the opening closed; make sure the raw edges are all tucked inside. Whipstitch to secure.

Step 7

Pin String

Pin the very center of your string to the middle of the pillow. Use a thread and needle to secure the string center to the pillow top.

Step 8

Begin Ribbon Bow

Start making the ribbon bow. Fold both ribbon edges, so that the ends are facing the other way along the top of the pillow.

Step 9

Wrap Ribbon

Start to wrap one ribbon around the other.

Step 10

Create Loop

Create a loop with the ribbon, and bring the ribbon back to where it came from. Pull gently.

Step 11

Make First Loop

Keep the loop in the center secure, and gently pull up one side of the ribbon creating a loop with it. Pin down to secure.

Step 12

Make Second Loop

Repeat for other side of ribbon.

Step 13

Secure Loops

Use a needle and thread to sew a couple of stitches in the ribbon loops to loosely secure in place to each other.

Step 14

Create Ribbon Center

Cut a 4” piece of 1-inch-wide ribbon, and wrap it around the bow center. The entire center of the bow should be held nice and tight in this wrap-around ribbon bow center. When you get to the end of the ribbon center, fold the raw edge of the 1-inch bow 1/4” towards the inside, and pin down. Whipstitch to secure.

Step 15

Attach Bow

Once again using a needle and thread, push down the center of your bow, and sew directly onto the pillow center along the back.

Step 16

Get a Tufted Look

Pull the needle and thread all the way through to the other side of the pillow back center, to create a more tufted look. Do this a few times back and forth, and tie off the needle and thread to finish.

Step 17

Snip Ends

Use a pair of nice sharp scissors, and cut the ribbon ends. Fray Check ribbon ends to keep from unraveling.

Step 18

A DIY Masterpiece
