Introduction

When it comes to crafting, I love to sit down with a new project and a tasty glass of wine. Many of my friends who attend my monthly craft nights feel the same way. When thinking of Valentine’s Day gifts for a few of them this year, a bottle of wine was a must. But I wanted to add a gift bag that not only presented the gift in a cute way but could be reused after as well. That’s where the idea for a canvas wine tote/craft tool tote came from.

Cut Your Canvas

To get started, cut your canvas so that it’s 30″ long and 6.5″ wide. Press the canvas if needed.

Add Ribbons

Next, add ribbons of your choosing to one end of the long canvas piece. Pin in place and sew onto the fabric. Think about your recipient when selecting the ribbons – which colors and patterns would they appreciate most? This ruler-esque ribbon I had in my stash is a great complement for my red-and-white color scheme.

Make a Finished Edge

To create a finished edge on the top of the bag, fold each end down 1/2″ and press with your iron. Cut a length of twill to your desired size; for my tote I cut a 20-inch piece of tape to use as the bag strap. Pin underneath the turned edge on the far side of top. Sew down the middle of the turned edge. Repeat for the other side, but pin the strap diaganoll across from where the other end has been placed.

Add the Straps

Once each end has been sewn, turn each end over one more time, again at 1/2″ and press. Flip the twill tape up before sewing – this will keep the handle standing up instead of facing down. Repeat for the other bag end.

Sew the Bag

Place the bag right sides together. Sew each each side with a 1/2″ seam, backstitching at both the beginning and end of your stitches.

Step 6

Box the Corners

To give the bag shape you can box the corners. Pinch the ends of the bag so that they form a triangle. Mark 1″ end from the corner tips and make a mark with your ruler. Sew on this line for each end. Trim away the excess fabric.

Turn the Bag Out

Turn the bag right out, making sure to push out the boxed corners for a crisp look. Press one more time, if necessary. Add your bottle of wine, a fun gift tag and you’re ready to go.
