Leaving home on a moment's notice is easy if you keep a checklist.
Stop mail and newspaper delivery.
Turn the AC up in summer and the heat down in winter.
Tip: Do not turn off HVAC completely; this could cause mold/mildew growth or broken pipes.
Discard perishables in the fridge.
A list of essentials inside suitcase will take guesswork out of packing. If you travel often, keep a second set of toiletries for packing.
Pack outfits individually to make sure you don't forget items.
Tip: Pack only what you can't buy at your destination.
Charge all cell phones and electronic devices.
Pack chargers and cords.
Turn off power strips to computers and TVs.
Unplug coffee maker, iron, toaster, hair dryer and small appliances.
Mute the telephone ringer.
Stagger timers on lights in multiple rooms, and leave blinds or drapery partially open so home appears to be occupied.
Make sure windows and doors are locked.
Tip: Drill a hole through the top and bottom sashes of double-hung windows and insert a ten-penny nail to prevent the window from being forced.
Notify a neighbor or family member of trip and give them your contact information.
Always take a printed copy of your itinerary.
