Step 2: Gather Your Materials and Tools

        Materials and Tools:

        non-skid treads
        underlayment compound
        hammer
        nails
        epoxy caulk
        steel straight edge
        linoleum knife
        rubber or vinyl adhesive
        hand roller

        Step 3: Prep the Area

Tip: For 48 hours before installation, keep treads and adhesives at no less than 70 degrees F.

Nail down any loose steps. Fill cracks, holes or depressions on step surface with underlayment compound.

        Thoroughly clean the steps.

        Step 4: Cut the Treads

Trim the treads to fit each step. For a tight fit, trim the rear edge of the treads with an under-bevel.

Cut treads with a steel straight edge and linoleum knife.

        Step 5: Install the Treads

Treads must adhere completely to the steps with no air spaces. Use epoxy caulk to fill any gaps between the steps and the treads.

Spread adhesive on the bottom of the tread and underneath the nosing.

Install two treads at a time.

Set the nose of the tread first, pushing back firmly and tightly.

Set the surface front to back toward the riser, pushing down firmly.

Roll the treads completely smooth with a hand roller.
