How to Tile a Hearth

Step 1: Mix and Apply the Mortar

Select tiles at a home improvement store.

Dry-fit the tiles, then make any necessary adjustments.

Mix thin-set mortar with water to create the consistency of frosting, then apply the mortar to the area where the tiles will be positioned. Cover the area thoroughly.

Step 2: Position the Tiles

Position the ceramic tiles over the mortar.

Clean the excess mortar with a margin trowel, taking care not to scoop mortar from underneath the tile.

Note: Start in the center of the area and work out to keep the pattern even and level.

Use spacers to keep separation between tiles. Stay even with the edge as you work, then use a damp sponge to clean away residue.

Step 3: Level and Seal the Tiles

Check to make sure the tiles are level and make necessary adjustments.

Finally, apply silicon caulk to seal between the tiles and wall, then spread the grout. Wipe away the excess grout with a damp sponge.
