How to Repurpose Old Furniture in a Bathroom

Use these step-by-step instructions to turn an old buffet into a vanity and use antique drills to create a towel rack.
        • Time

          Weekend

        • Price Range

          $500 - $1,000

        • Difficulty

          Moderate

        In this Project you will:

Step 1: Disassemble and Strip the Furniture

Disassemble the furniture as much as possible to reach and remove all of the old finish.

        Tips:

        • Work with a good light source so you can see any missed spots of paint or varnish.
        • Do all stripping work in one day. Don't allow the paint to re-dry.
        • If the stripper evaporates off the wood too rapidly, cover it with wax paper.

Step 2: Make a Vanity From a Buffet

For the buffet, cut holes in the tops for the basin drains to sit (Image 1), and appky silicone seal around the sink. Hire a plumber to install pipes beneath the buffet.

Place the vanity into the room and hook up the plumbing. Install the faucets and hardware (Image 2).

Step 3: Make a Towel Rack From Antique Drills

For the towel rack, use "U" shaped fasteners to attach the antique drills at the top and bottom (Image 1) to a stained wood plank. Use a rust spray to give the fasteners an antique patina.

Install the plank on the wall (Image 2), and check to make sure the rack is level.
