How to Replace a Pocket Door

An old favorite gets a new look with this updated pocket door.

Step 1: Score Around the Door Trim

To prevent the trim from splitting when you remove it, carefully score around it with a utility knife to break the polyurethane seal.

Step 2: Remove the Trim

Take off the trim and the jamb nailer with a small prybar. Take extra care when you remove the trim in particular since it is not as easily replaced as the jamb nailer.

Step 3: Remove the Old Door

Remove the old pocket door from the opening and detach the hardware so it can be reused on the new one, if necessary.

Step 4: Hang the New Door

Mark location for hardware on the top of the door and drill holes. Attach the wheels to the door (Image 1) and hang the new door on the existing track (Image 2).
