First, get a handle on the mess by moving everything out to sort through what goes and what stays. Clear plastic containers can help you do this. They're great for clearing away the clutter and then using for storage.
To keep items out of sight, add a cabinet to your garage. Look for units that offer keyed locks, so you're able to store poisonous materials out of the reach of children. A standing cabinet with adjustable shelves works will for storing various sized items.
Use open, adjustable shelves for frequently used items and storage for bulkier items. To keep bats and balls organized, purchase a hamper-style organizer. Each child can have their own section.
And a small three-tier shelf keeps messy shoes outside, and out of the way and orderly. For long-handled items, such as rakes and shovels, look for storage units to keep everything straight or use a durable rubber trash can. Inexpensive hooks come in a variety of sizes. Large deep hooks are perfect for hanging a ladder and bikes can be hung and kept off the garage floor as well.
On work benches, clear away anything that doesn't belong. Start sorting through your tools. Then use hooks to get tools off the tabletop and on a wallboard or peg rack. Anything that you can't hang needs to go into a storage unit designed specifically for tools -- with drawers that slide open and close easily and can handle the weight of the tools.
