Step 1: Measure and Mark the Board
Measure to the first floor joist to ensure the edge of the cement board lines up with it. Transfer that measurement to the board and draw a line with a straight edge.
Step 2: Score the Cement Board
Score the cement board with a utility knife and snap it off.
Step 3: Cut Holes
To cut holes, make a cardboard template, mark the board on both sides and score it (Image 1). Then, tap the circle with a hammer to remove it (Image 2).
Step 4: Secure the Boards
Once all the boards are in place, mark the joist locations and secure the boards down with cement board screws.
Step 5: Fill in the Seams and Gaps
Use mesh tape and thinset to tape and mud the seams. Also, use thinset to fill in any large gaps around the edges.
