Safety

When your considering to do all that work it would be the right time to replace the entire shower body (Valve with a pressure or temperature balance type as hundreds of children and the elderly are severally scalded yearly.

There is no excuse what so even to leave the older type of valves when spending time and money for aesthetics and leaving something highly dangerous in its palce

Tub surround

good question - I have same problem - how do you do it? My house was built in 1954 and now the tub/shower tile is all bulging and looks ready to fall off the wall. I want to install a tub surround but I have a small window in the side wall. Do I need any special tools to cut what the tub surround is made of.

shower wall install

I'm installing a shower kit, much like a tub surround. When the plastic wall was glued in place it curled up at the edges. How does one make that look decent? I'm not worried about the slight wavyness in the shower. It's the edge that is curled up about a quarter inch that is the problem because it's outside the shower itself.

What do you do with the lip that is all around the perimeter when this is not new construction. Is there some kind of molding you can cover it up with?

Can you put a new tub surround on top of another plastic surround? In Sweat Equity they used granite tile boards to cover a tub surround but I've never heard of them. Suppliers?

Tub Surround instalation

When measuring the length and width of the area to be covered, is the measurement taken from the inside of the tiled walls, or to the plastered wall behind the tile, or to the wall studs behind the tile and plaster? I have a situation where I must remove the interior, outside wall, of the tub area to insulate the wall. The house was built in 1929 and I have gutted the rest of the house down to the studs to insulate and remodel. The surround calls for a 60" opening, but I am not sure if that means from the inside of the tiled wall, or out to the studs. I do have to replace the removed tile, which will take out about 1 1/2" of tile and cement, and then put new Greenboard up in its place. That will probably leave the wall about an 1" further away than it was. I hate to buy the unit and check the fit, then find it wont fit and have to return it. I have no idea where the 60" measurement falls on the surround itself, or how much adjustment they allow for fit. Building up the wall is next.

sort of....

Could use a reference to identify "green board" or moisture resistant wall board. Perhaps even green board installation requirements..ie.."How do I do that?" Thanks.
