Step 1: Remove Blockage From the Drain

If the drain was covered or blocked to keep sewer gases from entering the home, make sure to remove the obstruction before installing the toilet.

Step 2: Install the Toilet Flange

Install the toilet flange if it isn't already installed. Insert closet bolts in the flange so that they stick up from the floor.

Step 3: Position the Wax Ring

Unwrap the wax ring and position it over the open drain. This ring creates a water-tight seal around the toilet drain. If water seeps out from underneath a toilet, chances are it needs a new wax ring.

Step 4: Place the Outlet Connector

Position the outlet connector so that it fits over the bolts in the toilet flange. Slide a washer over each bolt, followed by a nut. Tighten it down with a crescent wrench.

Note: More traditional toilets simply fit over the wax seal without an outlet connector in between.

Step 5: Attach the Main Body of the Toilet

Fit the main body of the toilet over the outlet connector and tighten down the bolts to attach. Be careful not to over tighten the bolts and crack the toilet.

Safety Alert: The toilet used in this project weighed about 120 pounds. Make sure to have enough help on hand to move, lift and position it or any other hefty item.

Step 6: Install the Toilet and Hardware

Install the toilet seat and other hardware according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Step 7: Connect the Water Supply

Wrap the threaded connectors with Teflon tape and connect the water supply to the toilet according to the manufacturer's instructions. Turn on the water at the supply shut-off and allow the tank to fill.
