How to Install a Kitchen Cabinet Light Rail

Add a polished look to your kitchen. Install a light rail to your kitchen cabinets to hide under-cabinet lighting.

Make Sure Light Rail is Flush

Take a piece of light rail and hold it up under the side of your cabinet. Make sure the light rail and cabinet are flush, and the end of the light rail and the wall are flush. At the corner of the cabinet, mark off the light rail along both the face and side of the cabinet, creating an intersect on the light rail.

Cut First Piece of Light Rail

Cut the light rail at a 45-degree angle. The middle point of the cut should be where the markings on the light rail intersect.

Cut Second Piece of Light Rail

Since the two sides of the cabinet are the same length, cut another piece of light rail to the same size, but at an opposite 45-degree angle.

Attach First Piece of Light Rail

Hold the first side piece of light rail under the cabinet. Make sure the center of the 45-degree angle meets with the corner of your cabinet and the rail is flush with the wall. Nail it into place using the nail gun.

Cut for Front Piece of Cabinet

Cut a piece of light rail to a length at least 5 inches longer than the face of the cabinet. Cut a 45-degree angle off of one end. With the angle cut, hold the front piece under the cabinet and flush it up with the affixed side piece. With the two pieces flush, mark off the opposite corner along the front and side of the cabinet. Cut the freshly marked front piece so the 45-degree angle is opposite the first angle and the intersection just marked is the middle of the 45-degree cut.

Attach Front Piece to Side Piece

With both angles cut on the front piece, flush it with the side piece. Nail it into the underside of the cabinet with the nail gun. Using the pin nailer, nail the corners of the two pieces of light rail together.

Attach Final Side Piece

Take the final side piece, and flush it with the front piece and the wall. Nail it into the cabinet with the nail gun. Use the pin nailer to nail the corners together.
