Step-by-Step Instructions For:

Running Wire Behind a Baseboard

To avoid the difficult and costly work involved in repairing walls and matching texture and paint, one way to run a cable in a wall is behind the baseboard. The patch work will be concealed behind the baseboard and will not require a drywall expert to make a beautiful finished product. By following these guidelines a homeowner can do the job without hiring skilled trades.

Mark the wall at the top of the baseboard to give a reference for cutting once you have removed it (Image 1).

Score the top edge of the baseboard (Image 2). This will release the paint and caulk so you don't peel the paint or the drywall paper when you remove it.

Use a broad knife and a screwdriver to gently pry the baseboard from the wall (Image 3). Take care not to mark the wall above the baseboard.

Mark a line 1/2 inch below the previous line (Image 4). When the drywall is cut on this line, removed and then replaced, the joint will be below the top of the baseboard.

Use a drywall saw to cut the drywall along the lower of the two lines (Image 5). The tip of the saw can be used to poke a hole in the wall.

Drill the holes for the cable high enough to avoid nails in the bottom and middle of the stud so the cable will be far from possible nail intrusion (Image 6).

Attach nail plates on the side of the stud to protect the cable from the nails or screws used when applying the drywall (Image 7).

Attach the drywall placing the fasteners into the plate at the floor and at the top edge of the replacement piece to miss the nail plates (Image 8).
