This was very helpful for me, however when i opened the valve on hot water heater nothing happened. Rather than using a compressor I decided to try opening a hot water valve upstairs rather then the closest one in my kitchen which is below the hot water heater. This solved my problem.

Water wouldn't drain !!!

We followed all the proper steps and just a trickle was all we got...UNTIL...a friend suggested using the air compressor to give a push, we inserted it into cold water line on top of water tank and tadaa, just took a few seconds of pressure ( removed air line and we were in business!! First time diyers changing out lower heating element...and WE GOTTER DONE !!

Don't mess with the Temp valve

If a piece of sediment gets into the valve it could leak permanently it is best to open a hot water valve at a sink. the tube from the temp relief valve should be visible and cut about 6 " from the floor by the water heater. if it leaks you want to know about it. invest 15 dollars on a water pressure gauge and learn to use it, it is easy. the relief valve is very important and your water pressure needs to be tested regularly. a bad valve will turn the water heater into a rocket and could destroy your house. Mythbusters did this and it is on youtube, it is a sight to see.

We decided to drain our hot water heater after continually finding sediment on top of our glasses in the dishwasher. While we were at it, my husband followed the directions on the tag on the hot water heater that stated that we should periodically test the emergency relief valve. First my husband couldn't get it to open, then he couldn't get it to close. So then we called the plumber.

(The plumber said that we should not worry about testing said valve. He said the best way to flush the hot water heater is to do nothing but attach a hose to the bottom valve, and let the water run out until it is cold. With the water left on to the heater, this ensures that the sediment is flushed out. I would recommend that you let the water cool off somewhat before you attempt this so as not to melt your hose.

The bright side is that we got our hot water heater up to code (as per our city the emergency relief valve needs to drain to the outside of the house.

HELP

I followed the simple steps to drain my hot water heater tank which is in the attic ... I I leave the cold water feed into the tank then the tank drains but if I turn off the cold water supply to the tank if does not drain ... Yes I have a hot water valve open to prevent the vacuum ... Can anyone tell me what I can do to make this tank drain ... I have to drain the tank so I can lift it to install a new rubber pan underneath it because the old one has deteriorated.
