How To Deep Clean the Bathroom

The bathroom can easily become one of the messiest spaces in the home. Here are the DIY Basics on deep cleaning your bathroom.

Step 1: Watch an Overview Video

        Step 2: Clean the Shower

For a thorough bathroom cleaning start up high, vacuuming your bath fan and light fixtures then work your way down shining up mirrors. Clean the sink surface including the drain plug where buildup can occur. Moving to the bath, a tub and tile scrubber cleans even hard-to-reach areas. Clean hard water stains regularly to avoid permanent marks. When using a pumice stone, be sure to keep it wet and be gentle when scrubbing. Remember to wipe bottles where soap scum can build up.

Lemon oil works well to break up soap scum on shower doors. Hydrogen peroxide dislodges mildew and mold from door tracks. A mixture of ¼ cup white distilled vinegar to 1 cup water in a spray bottle can tackle the tough water stains on glass shower doors. Toss dirty shower curtains and plastic liners in the washing machine and wash with laundry detergent and hot water. For lime stains on the showerhead, pour vinegar into a plastic bag. Tie the handles of the bag over the showerhead and secure with a rubber band. Let the showerhead soak overnight and then rinse with water.

        Step 3: Scrub the Toilet

Clean the toilet seat and base with a sponge used only for that purpose and, to help clean what can’t be seen, use a disposable toilet scrubber that can reach under the rim. Vacuuming rugs or machine wash rugs them, then scrub the floor thoroughly even in hard to reach places. Finish by wiping down towel bars and placing fresh towels.
