How to Cut Bendable Plywood Panels

Bendable plywood -- in which the grain of the layered wood veneers is laid in the same direction -- can be used to make unique pieces. Use these instructions to cut two identical panels.

        • Time

          2 hours

        • Price Range

          $1 - $50

        • Difficulty

          Easy

        Highlights:

Step 1: Prepare and Cut the Plywood

Spray water on the plywood before working to keep the material pliable.

When wrapping plywood, make sure both panels are exactly the same size. If the panels aren't the same, the plywood will rack (twist).

Draw a shape on the plywood and cut it with a jigsaw.

Cut the second shape, and make sure both shapes are dust-free. Use double-sided tape to adhere the two pieces.

Step 2: Cut the Shapes to Match

Use a router to cut the shapes to match. Use a bit with a bearing that will ride along the surface of the smaller shape (which should be on top of the larger shape).

Use a putty knife to detach the two shapes. Then, use a pencil to draw a starting line on both shapes.

        Step 3: Shape the Plywood

Pin the bendable plywood to shape with a brad nailer, keeping the plywood flush to shape. Spray more water onto the bendable plywood as necessary.
