How to Clean an Air System

Poor indoor air quality can lead to serious consequences. Learn how to thoroughly clean an air filtration system to improve the air quality in a home.
        • Time

          Under Half Day

        • Price Range

          $1 - $50

        • Difficulty

          Moderate

        In this Project you will:

        Step 1: Replace the Filter

Begin the fix at the intake vent. Use a screwdriver if necessary to remove the cover at the intake vent. Remove and dispose of the old existing filter. Clean out any dust or debris from the surrounding area and vent cover. Replace with a clean filter and then replace the vent cover.

        Step 2: Clean the Fan

Shut down the air handler by turning the "service disconnect" off. Now that it's safe to start cleaning, use a narrow brush to clean the dirty "squirrel cages" or fan. Clean out as much dirt and debris from the system as possible.

Finish by cleaning any other dirty air vents in the home. Turn the system back on.
